Robert Louis Stevenson nacque a Edimburgo, in Scozia, il 13 novembre 1850. Era un bambino debole e malaticcio e non aveva fratelli né sorelle.
Il padre di Stevenson era un ingegnere e voleva che anche suo figlio facesse l’ingegnere. Ma Robert Louis Stevenson voleva fare lo scrittore.
I suoi primi due libri, scritti nel 1878 e nel 1879, parlavano dei suoi viaggi in Europa. I suoi libri più famosi li scrisse quando era più grande.
Nel 1873, quando aveva 23 anni, Stevenson si ammalò. Non si riprese mai del tutto. I medici gli dissero che il clima freddo e umido della Scozia gli faceva male. Così nel 1876 partì per l’estero, per la Francia. Mentre era lì conobbe un’americana, Fanny Van de Grift Osborne. Robert e Fanny si innamorarono. Fanny aveva due figli ed era separata da suo marito.
Nel 1879 Stevenson seguì Fanny in California, negli Stati Uniti. Fanny divorziò dal marito e sposò Robert a San Francisco nel 1880. La famiglia Stevenson viaggiò in molti paesi.
Vissero in Inghilterra, Francia e Svizzera, oltre che negli Stati Uniti.
Nel 1889 si trasferirono sull’isola di Samoa, nel Pacifico del Sud. Stevenson morì lì il 3 dicembre 1894.
L’Isola del Tesoro venne pubblicata a puntate su una rivista per bambini nel 1883. Questa avvincente storia d’avventura rese Stevenson famoso. Lo strano caso del dottor Jekyll e del signor Hyde e Il rapito furono pubblicati nel 1886. Il dottor Jekyll e il signor Hyde è uno dei racconti gialli più famosi che siano mai stati scritti. Ne sono stati tratti molti film.
Tra le altre opere ci sono Il dominatore di Ballantrae (1889) e Catriona (1893). Stevenson morì prima di aver terminato di scrivere Weir of Hermiston.

Stevenson's father was an engineer and he wanted his son to be an engineer too. But Robert Louis Stevenson, wanted to be a writer.
His first two books, written in 1878 and 1879, were about his travels in Europe. His most famous books were written when he was older.
In 1873, when he was 23, Stevenson became ill. He was never well again. Doctors told him that the cold, wet weather in Scotland was bad for hm. So in 1876 he went abroad, to France. While he was there, he met an American woman, Fanny Van de Grift Osborne. Robert and Fanny fell in love. Fanny had two children and she was separated from her hsband.
They lived in England, France and Switzerland as well as in the United States.
In 1889, they moved to the island of Samoa in the South Pacific. Stevensondied there on 3rd December 1894. Tresure Island in a children's magazine in 1883. This exiting adventure story made Stevenson famous. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Kidnapped were published in 1886. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of the most ppular mystery stories that has ever been written. A lot of movies have been made of it. Other books are The Master of Ballantrae (1889) and Catriona (1893). Stevenson, died before he finished writting Weir of Hermiston.
